About the Department

The Orthopaedic Department at Nyeri County Referral Hospital is a specialized branch of surgery headed by a consultant orthopaedic surgeon. Operating both inpatient and outpatient units, the department delivers trauma, reconstructive, and general musculoskeletal services through a multidisciplinary team approach.

  • Trauma & Surgical Services

    • Invasive Procedures – ORIF (plating, intramedullary nailing), fracture/dislocation repair, biopsies, amputations, sequestrectomy, K‑wire fixation, external fixation
    • Non‑Invasive Procedures – Plaster casts (POP, fiberglass), splinting, bandaging, traction (skin and skeletal), limb elevation
    • Casualty & Theatre Care – Emergency reductions of fractures/dislocations under sedation or general anaesthesia

    • Arthritis & Joint Disorders – Osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, septic arthritis, rheumatic fever
    • Spinal Conditions – Lumbar spondylosis, spondylolisthesis, prolapsed discs, spinal stenosis, scoliosis/kyphoscoliosis, spinal infections (e.g., TB spine)
    • Bone Infections & Tumours – Acute, sub‑acute, chronic osteomyelitis; primary tumours (osteosarcoma) and metastatic lesions
    • Congenital Deformities – Clubfoot (CTEV), flat feet (pes planus), osteogenesis imperfecta

Patient Management & Referrals

  • Primary Entry – Room 20 (OPD Clinic) for diagnosis, treatment planning, and referral

  • Catchment Sources – General OPD, Mental Hospital, neighbouring counties/municipalities, external health facilities

  • Referral Pathways – To physiotherapy, occupational therapy, rehabilitation, or tertiary orthopaedic centres as required

Department Workflow & Team Collaboration

  • Inpatient Wards – Ward 7 (Male Orthopaedic) and Ward 9 (Female Orthopaedic)

  • Outpatient Clinics – Daily Orthopaedic Clinic (Rooms 20 & 21 casting room) and weekly consultant‑led clinic

  • Integrated Teams – OPD, ward, theatre, and emergency staff rotate to prioritise trauma and elective procedures
